The Electromagnets, highly acclaimed Austin jazz-rock band of the mid '70s,
will be performing a series of three concerts at the Ruta Maya Intl
Headquarters, 3601 So. Congress, on the 9th, 15th and 16th of February.
These will be their first public reunion concerts in over 25 years. The
concert the 15th will be a CD Release Party celebrating the release of
never
before available tapes recorded in 1975 as Electromagnets II. Ticket
prices
will be $20 at the door, $21 in advance at Waterloo Records, or online
at
http://www.ericjohnson.com. Seating is limited.

The Electromagnets were formed in 1973 by Stephen Barber, Kyle Brock,
and
Bill Maddox. In 1974 Eric Johnson, then a twenty year old guitar playing
phenomenon, joined the group and the Magnets went on to release their
album,
Electromagnets in 1975. The band toured until their keyboards player,
Stephen Barber, went to study in New York in 1977. The band then morphed
into the first Eric Johnson group.

Since then, Eric Johnson has become one of the most famous guitarists in
the
world, Stephen Barber has worked with artists such as Josef Zawinul,
David
Byrne, Keith Richards, and many others, Bill Maddox won Best Drummer in
the
Chronicle in 2003, and Kyle Brock, after playing with Eric for over a
decade, has played bass for Duck Soup, one of Austin's most famous cover
bands, for many years. The original Electromagnets album was remixed and
re-released on cd in 1998 on Rhino Records.

Come on down and relive the days of the Magnets at the Dillo or see a
band
that was once one of the most famous bands in Austin play again after 25
years.

Shows are expected to sell out quickly, so if you are interested don't
wait
to buy your tickets.

Dear everyone,

I would like to thank all the list members and fans who came to the
shows and supported this last fall tour of Asia and Western US!!! It was
a fast paced non-stop tour but we did meet some wondeful people, and
had some great times!

I very much enjoyed playing for all of you and want you to know that
your support is a blessing to me. I couldn't do it without you!

We are going to make a live performance DVD of a concert in late
February or March, so my next project will be putting that together.

I want to wish everyone all the best in the upcoming holiday seasons and
again thank you for your interest and for listening!

Yours truly,
Eric

Well there you go, probably the first message from EJ in an e-mail and

Yes! Eric Johnson ROCKS! I just got back from seeing him at the Troc in Philly.

I left at about 5. The directions said that it's take about 31 minutes, but my parents thought that it'd take about an hour and a half. I got there in about 40. Stood in line, talked to people about music. Doors opened, I grabbed a shirt and went to the very front! The opening band was the Josh Dion Band, and they were pretty good.

But EJ! He used the same Strat for all of his main set. It was either red or orange; I never could really tell. He used a Sunburst strat for the encores. He did a few songs I didn't know, and they sounded great. Then he did Trademark, which is one of my favorites. He said they were going to do more from "Ah Via Music.com, or whatever it is," and then he did an incredible Forty Mile Town. I'm not sure what the exact order was for the rest, and I didn't know a lot of them, but he did Tribute to Jerry Reed, and two songs by the bassist, one of which was a twelve-bar blues. There was also an instrumental twelve-bar blues song somwhere in there. He did Desert Rose, which is my third favorite (next to Lonely In the Night and Cliffs of Dover), and then he went into a guitar solo. It started out clean, and I realized yet again how awesome he is. Then he kicked on the distortion, and I was pretty sure of what was coming. When he hit that low E and then bent the 15th fret of the high E, everyone screamed! Cliffs of Dover was absolutely incredible! I think that that was his last one before leaving the stage, but I'm not sure.

There ended up being 4 encores. I'm not entirely sure which was where, but the songs that I remember were Summer Jam, 12 to 12 Vibe (which I was surprised to learn was only just released on Bloom, since he did it on the G3 tour in '96), Righteous, S.R.V., Friends, and Anthem for Today. He also did Drive My Car by the Beatles and Manic Depression and The Wind Cries Mary by Hendrix. He seemed to be having trouble with playing and singing part of Manic Depression (the "music sweet music..." part), but he did an absolutely incredible version of Wind Cries Mary.

Before Tribute to Jerry Reed, he announced that they were going to play some country and western. Then he started talking about how Texas was the only place where you could get five syllables out of a one-syllable word. Then he gave a demonstration with the words "Bill" and "Tones". The Tones one was really funny, but I can't remember it.

Fender® is pleased to announce the long-awaited Eric Johnson Signature
Model
Stratocaster guitar. The brainchild of Johnson himself, this new model
is
designed with Eric's own personal features and preferences, and it is
made
possible because of his expressed desire to give something back to the
collectors, players and, especially, the fans who have supported him
throughout his career.

The Eric Johnson Signature Model Fender Stratocaster guitar is built
from
some of the finest materials available. The light 2-piece alder body is
dressed in a very thin nitro cellulous lacquer finish, and the 1-piece
quarter-sawn maple neck sports a 12 inch fingerboard radius, 21 highly
polished frets, and a soft "V" neck profile.

Additional features include staggered vintage style machine heads, thus
eliminating the need for a string tree, custom pickups with countersink
screws and wound to Eric's specifications, and highly contoured body and
neck.

It comes with a parchment '57 style pickguard, 5-Way Switch, Master
Volume,
Neck Tone and Bridge Tone controls, and a Vintage Tremolo with 4 tremolo
springs, silver painted block and '57 style string recess with no paint
between base plate and the block.

It is available in four different finish options, including White Blonde,
Two-Color Sunburst, Candy Apple Red and Black.

You can see pictures and more techincal information here:

Hello from Oklahoma [16 Jan 2005|02:24am]

brew_askew
It's good to see an Eric Johnson community on here.

I've been a fan since 1990 when I was living in Arkansas. I heard High Landrons and Cliffs of Dover on the radio (this was quite a few years before good radio programming was mergered into oblivion). Later, The Ah Via Musicom album was played in its entirety on the same station (the incomparable Magic 105 in Little Rock) at midnight, back in the good ole days of Album-Oriented rock radio. From that point on I was hooked. I have since bought every CD available. His style of play and attention to detail is peerless. His music speaks to the soul in a way that few guitarists and lyricists can. I know that some people, especially macho male guitarists detest his singing so much, saying he should just quit singing altogether and just play. I, on the other hand, like to hear what he has to say lyrically now and then. His voice is good enough to do the job.
